Sussex Environmental Health Consultants, LLC was founded in 1998 by Dr. Susan E. White, who recognized a growing need for high-quality, science-based environmental consulting services in the Mid-Atlantic region. What began as a one-woman firm quickly developed into a trusted leader in indoor environmental quality and industrial hygiene, serving clients across Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Washington D.C., and Florida.
Over time, Sussex Environmental has expanded both its capabilities and its team—growing from a small all-women consulting firm into a diverse group of five full-time professionals, including three women and two men, who bring a wide range of field, laboratory, and industrial hygiene experience to every project.

Certified Legionella Water Safety & Management Specialist
Dr. Susan E. White has been a leader in the environmental consulting field since 1983. She holds numerous professional certifications and state licenses in hazardous materials and environmental health, including ACAC Board Certifications as a Certified Microbial Consultant (CMC), Certified Microbial Contamination Consultant (CMCC), and Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant (CIEC), as well as OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety credentials.
Susan has also completed comprehensive training and examination for her Legionella Water Safety & Management Specialist certification, expanding her expertise in waterborne pathogen control and indoor environmental health risk management. She continually invests in ongoing professional education and takes great pride in maintaining a strong reputation for integrity, accuracy, and excellence within the industry.
As the owner and founder of Sussex Environmental Health Consultants, LLC, a woman-owned business registered in Delaware and Maryland, Susan oversees all day-to-day operations, including public relations, staff training, report and document review, proposal development, job cost analysis, and financial oversight.
Before establishing Sussex Environmental, she served as an Industrial Hygienist with Delmarva Power & Light and as a contracted Safety Officer with FEMA, responding to major disaster events including the Seattle earthquake, Tropical Storm Allison in Louisiana, and the September 11th recovery efforts in New York City.

Alexis Thomas has been a full-time member of the Sussex Environmental Consultants team since 2012 and is a highly valued part of the organization. She has extensive experience in indoor air quality investigations, mold and moisture assessments, fire and soot evaluations, and industrial hygiene services across residential, commercial, and industrial settings, including the dental manufacturing and poultry industries.
Through a combination of advanced coursework and extensive field experience, Alexis now holds multiple ACAC Board Certifications, including Certified Indoor Environmentalist (CIE), Certified Microbial Consultant (CMC), and Certified Fire and Smoke Damage Consultant (CFSC). She has also completed training toward her Legionella Water Management and Assessment Specialist certification, pending her final exam.
Alexis additionally maintains Asbestos Inspector licenses in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia and holds an OSHA 30-Hour Construction Industry certification, reflecting her strong commitment to safety, compliance, and technical excellence. Her professionalism and expertise make her an integral contributor to the continued success of Sussex Environmental Consultants.
Kelsey M. Nickel (White), Industrial Hygiene Technician/Indoor Environmental Professional, CIE, CMC – ACAC
Kelsey Nickel began working part-time with the family business in 2008, assisting with industrial hygiene and OSHA monitoring within the poultry industry. After earning her Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from the College of Charleston, she returned in 2016 as a full-time member of the Sussex Environmental Consultants team.
Kelsey has extensive experience in indoor air quality assessments, mold and moisture evaluations, and industrial hygiene investigations across both residential and commercial environments, with a strong background in environmental health and safety within the poultry industry.
She holds multiple ACAC Board Certifications, including Certified Indoor Environmentalist (CIE) and Certified Microbial Consultant (CMC), as well as Asbestos Inspector licenses in Maryland and Virginia and an OSHA 30-Hour Construction Industry certification.
Kelsey has also recently completed coursework for her Phase One Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) training and has gained practical experience performing these inspections and developing detailed reports. Her scientific background, technical skill, and years of field experience make her a highly valued and versatile member of the Sussex Environmental team.
Kelsey R. Huster, Industrial Hygiene Technician/Indoor Environmental Professional
Kelsey Huster has been a dedicated full-time member of the Sussex Environmental Consultants team since 2019. She works closely with senior technicians and project managers on a wide range of environmental assessments, including indoor air quality investigations, asbestos and lead inspections, mold and moisture evaluations, and industrial hygiene projects within both residential and commercial settings — including experience in the dental manufacturing and poultry industries.
Kelsey holds her OSHA 10-Hour General Industry certification and maintains Asbestos Inspector licenses in Maryland and Delaware. She has also completed the coursework and field experience requirements for her ACAC Board Certification as an Indoor Environmentalist (CIE) and is currently preparing for her final examination.
Known for her attention to detail, professionalism, and strong teamwork, Kelsey continues to be a valuable member of the Sussex Environmental Consultants field team, contributing to the company’s reputation for accuracy and reliability in every inspection.
Conor Bisignaro, Industrial Hygiene Technician/Indoor Environmental Professional
Conor Bisignaro is a highly skilled remediation professional with more than nine years of hands-on experience in the environmental and restoration industry. He holds multiple industry-recognized certifications, including IICRC Water Damage Restoration and IICRC Applied Microbial Remediation, along with OSHA-10 General Industry certification. Conor is also a licensed Asbestos Inspector in Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, allowing him to support clients with compliant and accurate asbestos identification during renovation, demolition, and emergency response projects.
Before joining our team, Conor worked for a nationally recognized remediation company, where he gained extensive, real-world experience on both large-loss commercial projects and insurance-driven residential losses. His background includes managing complex water intrusions, performing mold remediation in challenging environments, and ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and according to industry standards.
Conor’s combination of formal certifications and substantial field experience makes him an invaluable asset to our inspection and remediation operations. He brings strong technical skills, a solutions-focused mindset, and a commitment to high-quality workmanship to every project.
Steven Nickel, Industrial Hygiene Technician/Indoor Environmental Professional
Steven Nickel is a dedicated field technician with a strong safety and technical background supporting Sussex Environmental’s inspection and remediation projects. He holds multiple industry-relevant certifications, including OSHA 10-Hour General Industry, OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety, IICRC Water Damage Restoration, Refrigerant Transition and Recovery certification, and is a licensed Asbestos Inspector in Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. His diverse credentials reflect his commitment to performing work safely, accurately, and in full compliance with state and industry standards.
Steven brings valuable hands-on experience in the HVAC and ventilation industry, where he has worked directly with mechanical systems that influence indoor air quality and building performance. His background also includes extensive remediation fieldwork, giving him a strong understanding of how moisture, microbial activity, and mechanical system deficiencies contribute to environmental concerns within structures.
As a valued member of the Sussex Environmental team, Steven applies his technical knowledge, safety-first approach, and strong work ethic to each project.
